Remarks of Senator John Pippy (R-37)

During Capitol Flag Ceremony

March 9, 2004

Governor Rendell, guests and friends. It is truly an honor to be part of this ceremony today.

The fact that this flag was with our troops in Iraq certainly has special meaning for me.

Operation Iraqi Freedom has been a challenge for America’s citizen-soldiers and they have met it head on.  They -- Sgt. Balkiewicz and all of the men and women serving in Iraq and the neighboring regions -- have upheld the finest traditions of our nation and our military.

They have displayed the flag as much more than just a patch on a uniform.  Our flag is a bond that unites us.  Together, we are much more than just individual men and women who were a long way from home.  To the people of Iraq, our troops are America.

I see the strength and dedication of America every time I see the flag.  I hope that everyone can see it today as well and remember the service of all of our men and women in uniform as we proudly fly this flag.
