Sen. James Rhoades
on Accountability Grant Program
Letter from Senate Education Committee Chairman James
Rhoades (R-29) to School Superintendents Regarding Accountability Grant Program
With the passage of Act 48 in December, the General
Assembly and the Governor created the Accountability Grant Program to provide
school districts with $175 million to assist in meeting the academic performance
targets required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Act 48 requires the Secretary of Education to notify
school districts of their grant amounts no later than April 10th in order for
you to submit plans for the expenditure of these monies. To be effective, the
plans must be precise. So, the law specifically requires the Department to
notify school districts of their grant amount based on a $175 million
allocation.
Unfortunately, the Secretary has announced that she
intends to notify school districts of their grant amounts based on a $250
million allocation. This would violate both the letter of the law and the spirit
of the planning process.
Attached is a copy of a letter setting forth our
position on this matter. Information on the grant amount your school district
would receive under the $175 million allocation required by law is available at
our caucus website at
www.pasenategop.com under "Issues."
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
