Pippy Introduces PASEC Legislation
Measure Would
Formally Recognize Award-winning Group
HARRISBURG -- Senator
John Pippy recently introduced legislation to formally recognize in state law a
groundbreaking organization that has received international accolades.
Senate Bill 1041 would establish the Pennsylvania Senior Environment Corps (PaSEC)
in statute, Senator Pippy said. SB 1041 is part of a package of environmental
measures being unveiled to bolster environmental protection in Pennsylvania.
PaSEC was established in 1997 as an
initiative of the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement, the Department
of Environmental Protection and the Department of Aging and is the first
statewide organized senior environment corps to be established in the nation.
Today, over 20,000 senior citizens volunteer their time in projects such as
water quality monitoring, environmental education, and environmental restoration
and protection efforts.
“We
have never formally established the Corps under state law and that’s a step that
is overdue,” Senator Pippy said. “PaSEC enables seniors to use their life
experiences to help their communities as environmental stewards and as mentors
for younger generations. Seniors appreciate the relationship between a quality
environment and a growing economy. PaSEC enables them to motivate their fellow
citizens in productive activities to protect natural resources.”
The
Senior Environment Corps is jointly funded by the Department of Environmental
Protection and the Department of Aging. The organization has received several
distinguished honors for its achievements, including the 1999 United National
Environmental Program Global 500 Roll of Honor. |
