Senate Panel to Meet in Chambersburg to Examine Ways
to Protect Manufacturing Jobs
HARRISBURG -- Seeking
to protect and preserve important manufacturing jobs, the state Senate Majority
Policy Committee will meet in Chambersburg next week to discuss what
Pennsylvania can do to save jobs and improve local economies, according to state
Senator Terry Punt (R-33).
Senator Punt, Chairman the Senate Community and
Economic Development Committee, said the Economic Development Symposium will be
held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, April 26 at the Four Points Sheraton,
located just west of the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and I-81 in
Chambersburg.
The Senator said the event will highlight current
economic development tools available throughout the Commonwealth, and outline
new programs that were signed into law as part of a recently passed economic
stimulus package.
He said committee members also will hear concerns
from business owners about the manufacturing industry and what lawmakers can do
to encourage job-creation.
“We want to get input from manufacturing companies
on what we as a state and a Legislature can do to help this crucial industry
remain competitive and productive,” Punt said. “We also want to receive
feedback on the potential impact of new fees and mandates that Gov. Rendell is
proposing as part of his budget.”
Punt noted that Pennsylvania has lost 133,000
manufacturing jobs in the last five years, leaving 730,000 manufacturing jobs in
the state.
Punt
said the loss of manufacturing jobs can create a dangerous ripple effect on
communities and businesses because of the supply chain of parts and services
that manufacturers typically sustain.
