Senate Panel to Meet in Edinboro to Examine Ways
to Protect Manufacturing Jobs
HARRISBURG -- Seeking
to preserve important manufacturing jobs, the state Senate Majority Policy
Committee will meet in Edinboro on Wednesday, April 28, to discuss what local
companies can do to take advantage of state economic development programs,
create new jobs, and expand their operations, according to Senators Mary Jo
White (R-Venango) and Jane Earll (R-Erie).
The Public Hearing on Manufacturing Issues will be
held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28 in the Seminar Room in the
University Center at Edinboro University. It is one of several hearings being
held around the state to examine ways to keep the manufacturing industry strong
and vital in Pennsylvania.
The senators said committee members will hear
concerns from business owners about the manufacturing industry and what
lawmakers can do to encourage job-creation.
“We want to get input from manufacturing companies
on what we as a state and a Legislature can do to help this crucial industry
remain competitive and productive,” White said. “We also want to receive
feedback on the potential impact of new fees and mandates that Gov. Rendell is
proposing as part of his budget.”
Earll noted that Pennsylvania has lost 133,000
manufacturing jobs in the last five years, leaving 730,000 manufacturing jobs in
the state.
The senators said the loss of manufacturing jobs can
create a dangerous ripple effect on communities and businesses because of the
supply chain of parts and services that manufacturers typically sustain.
