Senate Passes Conti Resolution Honoring "Blue Star
Mothers"
HARRISBURG -- The
Pennsylvania Senate unanimously passed a resolution sponsored by Senator Joe
Conti (R-10) today that recognizes and celebrates the history and contributions
of the “Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.”
The resolution was one of three introduced on the
floor of the Senate today in honor of Armed Forces Week, which culminates in
Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 15th. In addition to Senator Conti’s
recognition of “Blue Star Mothers,” Senator John Pippy (R-37) offered a
resolution honoring our Nation’s soldiers, sailors, airman, and marines serving
bravely in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Senator Don
White (R-41) also offered a resolution recognizing the contributions of the
“Gold Star Mothers of America, Inc.,” a service organization made up of American
mothers who have lost a son or daughter serving in active military combat.
The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was founded
as a patriotic service organization on February 2, 1942 to unite mothers who had
sons or daughters in the U.S. military. Congress chartered the organization in
1960.
“The tradition of raising a Blue Star flag in the
home of a military family during wartime originated during World War I,” said
Conti. “The number of blue stars on the flag represents the number of family
members who are serving in the military.”
“The Blue Star flags are a tremendous source of
pride in this nation,” said Conti. “This resolution acknowledges the dedication
of our fighting men and women, as well as the history and contributions of the
Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.”
Members of the organization provide support for
active duty service personnel and their families, promote patriotism, and assist
various veterans’ organizations, including Gold Star Mothers.
“We are grateful to the Blue Star Mothers, for their
dedication, their sacrifices, and their hard work,” said Conti, “Especially
during this time of war.”
