Committee to Hold Hearing on Voice Over the Internet Protocol

HARRISBURG -- Senate Communications & Technology Committee Chairman Sen. Jake Corman (R-34) and committee Vice Chairman Sen. John Rafferty (R-44) announced that the committee will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, September 15, 2004.

Corman and Rafferty have scheduled a public hearing to be held at the Montgomery County Community College -- West Campus in Pottstown for Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 10 a.m.

Corman and Rafferty said the committee hearing will focus on Voice Over the Internet Protocol, or VoIP technology.

Corman said that VoIP is voice over IP, also referred to as Internet Telephony.  In general, Corman said VoIP technology allows users to make and receive phone calls using the Internet.

In-Stat/MDR, a leading market research firm, reports that by the end of 2008, 10.3 percent of the 59.1 million broadband users in the United States will use IP telephony, and from 2004 through 2008 over 33 million VoIP enabled broadband access devices will ship worldwide.

Corman said the committee’s focus will be VoIP’s potential impact for consumers and how Pennsylvania can cultivate an environment for the growth of VoIP technology and adaptation.

Scheduled to testify are: Pennsylvania Public Utility Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli, Jim Kollenberger from the VON Coalition, PA Consumer Advocate Irwin Popowsky, Jim Burt from Sprint, Gary Zingaretti from ICORE, Steve Craddock from Comcast, Jonathan Askin from Pulver.com, Tony Hansel from Covad Communications and Dave Kerr from AT&T.
