Committee to Hold Hearing on Voice Over the
Internet Protocol
HARRISBURG -- Senate
Communications & Technology Committee Chairman Sen. Jake Corman (R-34) and
committee Vice Chairman Sen. John Rafferty (R-44) announced that the committee
will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, September 15, 2004.
Corman and Rafferty have scheduled a public hearing
to be held at the Montgomery County Community College -- West Campus in
Pottstown for Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 10 a.m.
Corman and Rafferty said the committee hearing will
focus on Voice Over the Internet Protocol, or VoIP technology.
Corman said that VoIP is voice over IP, also
referred to as Internet Telephony. In general, Corman said VoIP
technology allows users to make
and receive phone calls using the Internet.
In-Stat/MDR, a leading market research firm, reports
that by the end of 2008, 10.3 percent of the 59.1 million broadband users in the
United States will use IP telephony, and from 2004 through 2008 over 33 million
VoIP enabled broadband access devices will ship worldwide.
Corman said the committee’s focus will be VoIP’s
potential impact for consumers and how Pennsylvania can cultivate an environment
for the growth of VoIP technology and adaptation.
Scheduled to testify are: Pennsylvania Public
Utility Commissioner Kim Pizzingrilli, Jim Kollenberger from the VON Coalition,
PA Consumer Advocate Irwin Popowsky, Jim Burt from Sprint, Gary Zingaretti from
ICORE, Steve Craddock from Comcast, Jonathan Askin from Pulver.com, Tony Hansel
from Covad Communications and Dave Kerr from AT&T.
