Conti Appointed to Penn State's Board of Trustees
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn
State announces the appointment by Governor Edward G. Rendell of Senator Joe
Conti (R-Bucks) to serve on the University's board of trustees.
The state Senate
confirmed Conti's appointment on Nov. 8. Conti graduated from Penn State with a
bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts in 1976, and with a master of arts
degree in American studies in 2000. He has served in the Senate since
1997, and served in the House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. He is
the chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee.
Conti replaces his
father, Walter Conti, who served on Penn State's board of trustees for over 30
years -- first as a member elected by the University's alumni, and subsequently
as a gubernatorial appointee. The senior Conti graduated from Penn State
in 1952 and worked in the restaurant business for over 50 years. He also
served on the boards of the Pennsylvania and National Restaurant Associations.
"It's a privilege to
serve on the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees," said Conti.
"My father is irreplaceable, and I'll do my best to continue his legacy."
Conti will serve a
three-year term on the 32-member board, whose primary duties are to select the
university's president, determine the university's major goals and policies,
approve the university's budget, and report to the people of Pennsylvania.
The board is comprised of five ex officio members, including the governor and
the secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture, Education, and Conservation
and Natural Resources; six trustees appointed by the governor; nine elected by
University alumni; six elected by organized agricultural societies within the
commonwealth; and six elected by the board of trustees representing business and
industry.
"Penn State's board of
trustees is one of the finest public education boards in the country," Conti
said. "I look forward to helping them continue to fulfill their mission of
our state's land grant institution."
