Senate Passes Vance Bill to Boost Patient Safety, Quality of Care
HARRISBURG -- Patient
safety and the quality of care received by patients would be bolstered by
continuing education requirements for nurses under legislation authored by Sen.
Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland/York).
“The medical malpractice
patient safety initiative passed several years ago requires physicians to
completed 100 hours of continuing education every two years,” Vance said. “If
nurses want to be considered professionals, we need to increase our knowledge
too. With all the technological changes continuing education is vital in order
to take care of patients and be better educated nurses.”
Senate Bill 235 would amend
the Professional Nursing Law to require nurses to obtain 30 hours of continuing
education every two years as a condition of license renewal. The bill now goes
to the House.
