Absence of Gubernatorial Leadership Leads to Veto
of Key Tax Cuts
HARRISBURG -- Senate
Majority Whip Jeffrey E. Piccola (R15) expressed his amazement today at Governor
Rendell's veto of House Bill 515, a pro-growth measure recently approved by the
Legislature with bipartisan support that includes tax cuts for the
Commonwealth's families and employers, calling it a disservice to those
responsible for creating jobs and job opportunities in Pennsylvania.
“Our Governor claims that he is serious about
jobs and job creation. Why wouldn't he exercise leadership by signing this
legislation? It's a hollow claim that $51 million in a $24 billion budget
cannot be found to help create jobs,” said Piccola. “On the fiscal side, that's
less than 1/5 of one percent of the total Commonwealth budget. In reality, it's
the absence of executive leadership.”
“House Bill 515 represented a great opportunity
to take an important step to turn around our economic competitiveness and create
real, family-sustaining jobs. By vetoing this measure, the Governor continues
to hold hostage to higher taxes Pennsylvania's job creators and families.”
“For all of his rhetoric on economic stimulus
and growth, this veto is a disservice to our business community. Tax cuts are
the most time proven way government can foster and encourage job creation.
Rejecting these meaningful yet responsible tax cuts is just the latest example
of Governor Rendell's lip service, proving once again that enhancing the jobs
climate of this state is not a priority to his Administration.”
