Senate Unanimously Approves Robbins' Bill
Making Construction Code More Flexible
HARRISBURG -- Legislation
sponsored by state Senator Bob Robbins (R-50) that would make the Pennsylvania
Construction Code more flexible was unanimously passed by the Senate last week.
Senator Robbins introduced
Senate Bill 736 after being made aware that some area businesses --who are
planning to expand their facilities but never received an occupancy permit --
are being required by the Department of Labor and Industry to bring their
current facility up to the present building code prior to expanding. For these
businesses, remodeling their current facilities is cost prohibitive.
Senate Bill 736 would amend
the Pennsylvania Construction Code by providing such businesses an opportunity
to obtain an occupancy permit if they meet several commonsense safety
requirements. They would then be exempt from having to bring their building up
to the Construction Code.
Senate Bill 736 now heads to
the House for further consideration.
“Government does not create
jobs, but it can certainly stifle job creation efforts,” said Robbins. “It is
my hope that this legislation is soon approved by the House and presented to the
Governor so that these businesses can soon expand their operations and, in turn,
increase employment opportunities.”
