Senate
Public Health & Welfare Committee
to Hold
Hearing on Public Assistance
HARRISBURG -- Sen.
Jake Corman (R-34), Chairman of the Senate Public Health & Welfare Committee,
announced that the committee will hold a special hearing on Temporary Assistance
for Needy Families (TANF) funding requirements from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, September 5 in Room 8E-A in the Capitol's East Wing.
Corman
said the Committee will focus on the Pennsylvania Department of Public
Welfare's efforts to meet new TANF funding requirements.
With
reauthorization of TANF, the federal government has again emphasized a
work first approach and that Cash Assistance is meant to be
transitional. However, Pennsylvania currently, and at best estimates,
has only 26 percent of TANF recipients actively engaged in work
activities, among the lowest in the country.
"TANF
reauthorization hopefully provides us with the opportunity to get back
on track, to focus on work and work activities as a means of ending the
cycles of dependency that many our residents find themselves locked in,"
Corman said. "Hopefully, this hearing will provide us with the
information we need to ensure that our welfare system is one that
promotes self sufficiency, not dependence."
