Senate Law & Justice Committee to
Hold a Public Hearing on Beer Sales in
Supermarkets and Gas Stations
HARRISBURG --
Senator John Rafferty and Senator Sean Logan announced today that the Senate Law
& Justice Committee will hold a public hearing in March regarding the sale of
beer in Pennsylvania supermarkets and gas stations. At a committee hearing on
Tuesday of this week Senator Rafferty asked Liquor Control Board Chairman
Patrick Stapleton if supermarkets were applying for restaurant liquor licenses
with the intent to sell beer. Chairman Stapleton confirmed that numerous
applications were pending before the Board.
Following a series of recent committee hearings on underage drinking, Senator
Rafferty expressed concerns about possible expansion of access to alcohol by
minors. Rafferty and Logan would like input from consumers, beer distributors,
retail food stores, breweries, restaurants and taverns. Legislation has not
been introduced to address this issue.
Senator Rafferty is the Republican Committee Chairman from Audubon, Montgomery
County and Senator Logan is the Democratic Committee Chairman from Monroeville,
Allegheny County.
